Solar Forced Air Heat and Domestic Hot Water - Ocean Pines, MD

Project: When Fred Husman received his first utility bill of $600 in his new home in Ocean Pines, Maryland, he decided to think about alternative energy. His previous home had solar domestic hot water so he was familiar with solar. At first, his HOA was hesitant about installing collectors on the roof, but eventually approved it.
Purpose: He wanted to use the sun's energy for domestic hot water, but also to heat his home through forced air heating. How does it work?
System: Installed in Fall 2007, three collectors were placed on the roof. Depending on solar strength, the system is capable of running in 3 modes; solar alone, combined heat pump and solar, or heat pump alone. An aqua coil transfers the heat from the solar to his forced air heating system. RE-Align's partner, Eastern Shore Solar managed the project.
Benefits: Fred has noticed his utility bill has approximately been cut in half! He enjoys monitoring the temperature of his system - and knows all of the energy provided by the sun is being used to heat his home and hot water.
