Solar Hot Water - Park Place Hotel, Ocean City, MD

Project: Hotel Manager Todd Berger brought the idea before ownership in hopes of not only saving the company money in the long run, but also in hopes of latching on to a growing trend in “green” amenities being offered in hotels all over the world.
Purpose: With the tremendous amount of roof space and sun, solar thermal was the way to go! This system would supply approximately 50% of the hotel's hot water needs, the first solar hot water system installed in Ocean City!
System: The install included 36 SOLAR HOT collectors mounted to the roof and a large amount of storage to utilize all of the energy produced.
Benefits: The Park Place Hotel took advantage of the 30% federal tax credit. In addition, the state of Maryland offered up to a $2,000 grant, and there was even a federal depreciation of up to 85-percent, which makes the initial investment pay back quicker than some naysayers might expect. It is estimated that this system, after paying for itself, will save the hotel over $250,000 throughout the life of the system.
